Quick Answer: For a gas whole-home unit, the Rinnai Sensei RX199iN and Rheem IKONIC ECOHS200iN are close. Rinnai wins on efficiency (0.98 vs 0.96 UEF, per ENERGY STAR) and labor coverage (5 years if registered vs 1 year); Rheem wins on built-in Wi-Fi and a 15-year heat-exchanger warranty that includes full-unit replacement. Both now carry 15 years on the heat exchanger, so the old ā15 vs 12 yearsā gap is gone. Prices are within a few dollars: $1,532.79 for the RX199iN at Big Frog Supply on October 31, 2026, against $1,529 for the IKONIC at Home Depot on October 10. If you need electric, Rheem wins by default: Rinnai doesnāt make an electric tankless heater.
Last updated October 31, 2026: warranty, efficiency and specifications re-checked against Rinnaiās Sensei RX spec sheet and residential warranty, Rheemās ECOHS200iN product page, and ENERGY STARās certified gas water heater database. Rheemās heat-exchanger warranty is 15 years (this page previously said 12). The IKONIC does not have LeakGuard, which is a feature of Rheemās older Performance Platinum line. Rinnai prices are from three authorized online dealers on October 31.
Rinnai and Rheem are the two gas tankless brands youāre most likely to see at a big-box store or on a plumberās quote, and their flagship condensing units are close enough that the better choice usually comes down to warranty details, installer support and price on the day. Hereās how they compare model for model, using each makerās own paperwork.

By the numbers
- 0.98 vs 0.96 UEF: ENERGY STARās ratings for the Rinnai RX199iN and the Rheem IKONIC ECOHS200iN. 0.98 is the highest rating on ENERGY STARās certified gas tankless list (29 of 460 listings on October 31, 2026).
- 173 vs 176 therms a year: ENERGY STARās estimated gas use for the two heaters. At $1.50 a therm, the Rinnai saves about $4.50 a year.
- 15 years on both heat exchangers: Rinnaiās limit is 15 years or 12,000 operating hours, whichever comes first; Rheemās product page says its 15-year term includes full-unit replacement.
- 5 years vs 1 year of labor: Rinnai covers reasonable labor for 5 years if the heater is registered within 90 days, according to its warranty document; Rheem lists 1 year of labor for the IKONIC.
- 5.8 GPM each at the federal 67°F test rise, per ENERGY STAR. The 11.1 and 11.2 GPM headlines need a much smaller temperature rise: Rinnaiās own groundwater chart gives the RX199iN 4.6 GPM with 35°F inlet water at a 120°F setting.
Flagship vs flagship: RX199iN vs IKONIC
The Rinnai Sensei RX199iN and Rheem IKONIC ECOHS200iN are the two units homeowners cross-shop most, and on paper theyāre close: both are 199,000 BTU condensing heaters with stainless primary and secondary heat exchangers, both vent in PVC, and both list half-inch gas line compatibility subject to local code. ENERGY STAR gives them the same 5.8 GPM rating at its 67°F test rise.
The differences are in the details:
- Efficiency: the Rinnaiās 0.98 UEF beats the Rheemās 0.96, but the gas saving is only about 3 therms a year.
- Warranty: both cover the heat exchanger for 15 years. Rinnai adds a 12,000-hour cap and 5 years of labor if you register; Rheem includes full-unit replacement but only 1 year of labor.
- Smart features: the IKONIC has built-in EcoNet Wi-Fi. The RX199iN uses Bluetooth for setup and needs the RWM200 module for app control.
- Fuel flexibility: one RX199iN covers natural gas or propane and indoor or outdoor (with the RXOVC vent cap). Rheem sells separate ECOHS200iN and ECOHS200iP models.

Price is the wildcard
The two flagships reach buyers through different channels. Rinnai prices the RX199iN as āContact PRO for Pricingā and publishes a list of 31 authorized online sellers; it says units bought from websites not on that list carry no Rinnai warranty. On October 31, 2026, three of them listed the RX199iN at $1,532.79 (Big Frog Supply), $1,703.10 (SupplyStop) and $1,768.98 (Plumbing-Deals). The IKONIC ECOHS200iN is a retail model sold mainly through Home Depot, where our October 10 check found it at $1,529 against a $1,799 list price.
At those prices the gap is a few dollars, so compare installed quotes, not box prices. Two costs to add on the Rinnai side: an isolation valve kit ($93 to $99 for Rinnaiās MIVK-T-LW) and, if you want app control, the RWM200 Wi-Fi module ($150 or more). On the Rheem side, the shorter labor warranty matters more if your installer charges for warranty visits after year one.
The deciding factor: do you need electric?
This is where the comparison stops being close. Every Rinnai tankless heater burns natural gas or propane; Rinnaiās only electric water heaters are its REHP heat pump tank models. Rheem makes gas and a full electric tankless lineup, from the point-of-use 13 kW RTEX-13 to the whole-home 36 kW RTEX-36. If you donāt have a gas line, donāt want one, or youāre outfitting an apartment or ADU, Rheem is the only one of the two with an on-demand electric option.
Recirculation and instant hot water
Both brands sell a version of their flagship with a recirculation pump built in: Rinnaiās RXP199iN and Rheemās IKONIC SR series (ECOHSR200iN at retail). Rinnaiās own competitor quick-reference sheet matches the RXP199iN against Rheemās RTGH-SR11 and lists both at 0.98 and 0.96 UEF respectively. On October 31, 2026 the RXP199iN cost $1,861.02 at Big Frog Supply, $328.23 more than the pump-free RX199iN. Rinnaiās Smart-Circ learns seven days of hot water use and schedules the pump around it, and a thermal bypass valve in the box lets it recirculate without a dedicated return line.
Which should you buy?
- Have gas, want the highest efficiency and the longest labor coverage: buy Rinnai, and register it within 90 days to get the 5-year labor term.
- Have gas, want built-in Wi-Fi and a heat-exchanger warranty with full-unit replacement: buy Rheem, especially if the IKONIC is on sale.
- Need electric, no gas line, or building an ADU or apartment: buy Rheem; Rinnai has no electric tankless heater.
- Not sure gas is right at all: read our electric vs gas tankless comparison first.

The bottom line
Rinnaiās and Rheemās gas flagships are close enough that warranty details and installed price should decide it. The RX199iNās edges are efficiency, one-SKU fuel flexibility and 5 years of labor if registered; the IKONICās are built-in Wi-Fi and full-unit replacement under its 15-year heat-exchanger warranty. The one case where the comparison isnāt close is electric: Rinnai doesnāt sell an electric tankless heater, so if thatās what you need, Rheem is the only one of the two to consider.
